John was a Sergeant in Army Security and received the Good Conduct medal. He met his wife at a roller rink while on liberty. The first Christmas after they were married, he was supposed to be "in charge of quarters" and his wife would have to spend Christmas alone. One of his squad was Jewish and stepped forward to volunteer to take the duty. That meant that John and his wife did get to spend their first Christmas together.
