James spent 20 years in the U.S.Navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer (DCC). He was aboard the USS Oryan (AS-18) and served in both Korea and Vietnam. He received 5 Good Conduct medals, and the National Defense Medal. He also served in the Fleet Reserve Association after his retirement.
