Allen followed his two brothers who served in the second World War by joining the Air Force in 1951. He serve in Korea, France, Belgium and Germany. He was an Airman 1st Class and worked with the 5th Radio Relay squad. During his time in Europe, Allen made four trips to the Netherlands bringing relief supplies from France during the flooding in 1953. He found the Dutch people to be very hospitable despite their problems.
