Charles served in both WW-II and Korea. He was in the Army and during WW-II he was with Patton's 3rd Army. He received 6 battle stars (4 from WW-II and 2 from Korea) and as well as the Good Conduct Medal, The Medal for Marksmanship with a Sub-Machine Gun while on active duty as well as other medals and decorations. He says that the worse injury he received was in London, England. He awoke one night and went to get a glass of water. He didn't see that the cover of the grease pit had been removed and tripped. He fell in to a metal bar that smashed out all of his front teeth and then fell in to 5 feet of grease. Later, he took out his false teeth during a battle and set them in a box. When he returned to get them, they had been stolen by a curious child. While in Europe he was riding in the back of a large truck that had a tarp cover. The tarp was partially pulled back so that he could see the sky. Suddenly, a German Fighter plane strafed the truck and Charles could see tracers coming directly at him, everything went dark and he fainted thinking he was dead. Actually, he wasn't hurt at all, the tarp had blown closed.
