Charles served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a Lieutenant JG aboard the Landing Craft LCIG-366 where he was the gunnery officer. He was awarded the Pacific/Philippine ribbon, the Asiatic Medal and Victor over Japan Medal. At one point during the war, he came down with Appendicitis and had to be "High Lined" in a stretcher to an LST for treatment.
