Howard served in the U.S. Army from 1944 through 1946 and again from 1953 through 1968. During WW-II he was with the 9th Armored Division in Europe and with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. He received the Purple Heart and many other decorations. He retired as a Sergeant First Class.
