Samuel was in the Army Air Corps and served as a sergeant in the 382nd Air Service Group. He was an Air Frame Mechanic and flew "Over the Hump" in the China-Burma-India theater. He says his most embarrassing experience was having dysentery while flying in to China and having to use a cardboard box as a toilet while everyone on the plane watched. He was in Lujoe, China when the war ended and then had to help fly Chinese military in to Pekin (Bejin) to defend the country. While in the states he was in an accident and was admitted to Percy Jones Hospital where he met his wife Betty, an Army nurse.
