Carroll retired as a Lt. Colonel after 26 years in the Army Air Corps and Air Force. He served in the South Pacific during WW-II and also Turkey, Labrador and Europe afterwards. He is highly decorated having received the Silver Star (he was also nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor), the Soldier's Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and a large number of other medal and citations. While in New Guinea during the Second World War, he was shot down and was lost for 30 days before finding his way back to friendly lines.
